Endgame Survival
The endgame begins when your board is crowded and one mistake can end the run. The goal is to stay stable and keep merges flowing.
Endgame Warning Signs
- Two or fewer empty cells
- Large tiles off the chain
- Forced moves in your forbidden directions
- No merges on your next two moves
Endgame Survival Rules
Rule 1: Space is life
Prioritize any move that creates space, even if it is a small merge.
Rule 2: Protect the anchor
Your highest tile must stay in the corner. If it moves, you lose control quickly.
Rule 3: Merge toward the corner
Every merge should drift toward your anchor. Avoid merges that pull your chain outward.
The "Two-Move" Test
Before any move, ask:
- What does the board look like after this move?
- What safe move do I have next?
If you cannot answer the second question, find a different move.
Endgame Patterns to Aim For
The solid chain
| | | | |
| 2 | 4 | 8 | 16 |
| 32 | 64 |128 |256 |
| 64 |128 |256 |512 |
This shape keeps merges available in multiple rows while your anchor stays safe.
The recovery lane
Keep one column or row as a "work lane" for small tiles:
| | | | |
| | | | 2 |
| 16 | 8 | 4 | 2 |
|256 |128 | 64 | 32 |
This lane gives you space to combine low tiles without disturbing your chain.
When to Take a Risk
Sometimes a risky move is the only way out. Accept a risk only if:
- The board is completely locked
- The risky move creates an immediate merge
- You have a recovery plan if the spawn is bad
Warning
If a risky move breaks your anchor, it is usually game over. Take it only as a last resort.
